The similarities between running a business and being in a circus

Have you ever been to a circus?  Even if you haven’t, you will no doubt be aware of the popular acts of plate spinning and juggling.  I often think, as do my clients and colleagues, that running a successful small business is very much like juggling or plate spinning as both require a high degree of skills, enormous concentration, a lot of training and the ability to have an eye on many things at once.

After all, the average small business owner does many different things everyday and if one of these things doesn’t get attention, then the balls will drop and the plates will smash.  There will also be consequences if tasks do not get completed as and when they should.  So, what do I mean?

As the owner of an SME business myself on a day to day basis I could be an accountant, an HR manager, a receptionist, an MD, a marketing manager and an office manager.  All in an 8 hour day!  Is this you?
If one of these functions isn’t addressed then there will be consequences.  You get may get a fine from HMRC or have a disgruntled staff member or even loose sales due to a lack of marketing meaning opportunities are missed.

If marketing does not get your attention, then how can your business grow or carry on achieving?  Marketing is a constant and very important function and like plate spinning, you will likely have many activities happening at once, like an email campaign, a blog, a tweet and a live website.

Are you guilty of taking your eye off the ball when it comes to your marketing?
Do you feel like you need training or help to keep your campaign plates spinning?
In order to keep my marketing balls in the air, I happily outsource my business finance functions and my PA/reception work to leave me the right time I need to dedicate to marketing.

After all, a business cannot survive without marketing.  Outsourcing is the way forward.  Yes it costs initially, but you will save time which could be time you spend doing what you do best and ensuring you improve your turnover, market share and local profile.
